Short bus ride to Chur where you step aboard the world-famous Glacier Express and take your reserved seat for a spectacular ride through the heart of the Swiss Alps. Picturesque landscapes of ice-capped mountains and stone-built villages, with chalet-style houses, will be in sight as you ascend to the highest point of the route, 2,033 metres to the icy Oberalp Pass. Our base for the next 3 days will be the charming mountain resort of Brig. Dinner and overnight in Brig.

Morning departure by coach to Lake Geneva. Our first stop is Chillon Castle located on the western bay of Lake Geneva. A local expert will show you the medieval Castle, former home to the Counts of Savoy, immortalised by Lord Byron's “Prisoner of Chillon”. Drive further to Montreux where you have some free time to explore the city on your own. Return to the Rhone Valley in late afternoon. Dinner and overnight in Brig.

Day trip to the famous Zermatt. Leave the coach behind in Taesch and board a mountain train to climb the last few miles up to car-free Zermatt, a picturesque cluster of rustic chalets beneath the Matterhorn. In Zermatt board the “Gornergrat Bahn” one of Switzerland’s top excursion destinations since 1898. It was the world’s first fully electrified cog railway. Today it is a modern, eco-friendly railway, equipped with a regenerative braking system that generates electricity on the descent and so saves energy. Thus the energy for one to two new mountain drives is won by three downhill drives. The panorama is among the finest in the world. The views take in the Monte Rosa massif with Switzerland’s highest peak (Dufourspitze, 4,634 m); the second-largest glacier in the Alps, the Gorner Glacier; and a total of 29 mountains above 4,000 m, including, of course, the Matterhorn in all its glory. The delights of Lake Como are many and varied and this morning you can enjoy one of its many highlights. Our boat tour takes us to the elegant and exclusive resort of Bellagio which, with its idyllic location on a promontory on the lake, is often described as the most beautiful town in Italy, Spend the afternoon exploring at your own pace before returning to your resort by boat. Dinner an overnight in Como.

Today we visit nearby Lake Maggiore and its most attractive lakeside town, Stresa, which owes its origin to the days of the ‘Grand Tour’ when Europe’s 19th century aristocracy, having crossed the border from Switzerland, experienced their first taste of Italy! Unmistakably Mediterranean in character, its shores, lined with oleanders and palms, backed by classic belle époque hotels create an ambience of classic gentility. Take a stroll along its impressive palm-lined promenade and enjoy the fine views across the shimmering lake to the Borromean Islands just offshore. Farewell dinner at local restaurant. Overnight in Como.
